Sun Sentinel Says: Change Permanent Alimony….
Permanent alimony made sense in an era when few women worked outside the home. But it’s hard to hear the stories of people who continue to pay alimony to spouses they divorced long ago without seeing the handcuffs that permanent alimony can create on families old and new….

to rkhill58: Your case is also an example why the laws need to be changed. We want fairness in the law and predictability. Some people who need alimony don’t get it, while others who are capable of earning a good income get permanent alimony. In your case you should receive alimony for a period of time so you can establish yourself and eventually become independent.
Mandated child support ends when the child reaches 18 years of age. Why must able bodied individuals continue to be supported till death? Years ago, a Minnesota judge ruled that “post-decree lesbianism is a material change in circumstances which justifies the termination of alimony.” In alimony reform, the definition of change in circumstances needs to include any change in sexual orientation, or changing one’s gender. The ex (now a lesbian) gets rewarded for her sexual lifestyle change by never having to work while I am punished till death. Where is the justice? Alimony should end when the youngest child reaches 18 years of age or no more than 25% the length of the marriage. That gives enough time to pursue an advanced degree or obtain vocational training in order to be self sufficient.
I agree with you in your case, however mine is just the opposite, he cheated on me several times including with his AUNT. I don’t think I should be made to live a lower standard of life when he makes 4 times the money I do and he is the one who cheated, otherwise I never would have divorced him. He is still in our house while I have to have a roommate just to be able to survive. He lives it up while I live frugally.
